19 year old Boyan Slat has come up with a solution that he believes will aid the the plastic pollution problem. The method is the worlds first feasible project to clean the ocean of plastic using the oceans currents.
Boyan first became frustrated when diving in Greece and came across more plastic than he did fish. Plastic pollution is one of the oceans largest threats. Millions of tones of plastic enters the ocean yearly and never goes away, instead it breaks down into smaller pieces. Plastic follows through the oceans currents and is even found in Antarctica. The ocean is floating with plastic that inevitably affects the sea life surrounding it.
Boyan has then come up with a method that uses the environment and technology to provide a solution to the problem. The Ocean Cleanup Foundation works on a passive collection that is 100% driven by the oceans winds and currents. Plastic gravitates to five rotating currents where an array of floating barriers will be attached to concentrate the plastic before removing it. No nets are used in the process claiming that zero sea life will get tangled in the collection. The foundation claims that the hot spots for plastic can be cleaned up within five years.
The process is extremely inventive and provides a good concept to the plastic problem. You can read further on the Ocean Cleanup Foundation Website for more information.
