The main species found here are the bottlenose (Tursiops aduncus) and the Indo-Pacific humpback (Sousa chinesis) dolphins. It is believed they remain permanent residents of this area their entire lives – averaging 30-40 years. The Indo-Pacific humpback is usually seen in our local rivers and estuary systems and are often referred to as estuary or Mary River dolphins. Bottlenose dolphins are more outgoing than Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, which tend to be shy.
Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) are also found in the waters of Hervey Bay between June and September. These dolphins are fast in the water and exciting to watch as they frolic. One of the best times to view dolphinsin Hervey Bay is between December and July.
